Powder compacts became particularly popular between the 1940’s and 1960’s but early examples date back to the 1920’s when the bold geometric patterns of Art Deco had a major influence on design.

However, it was the film industry that exerted the most influence with women of all ages wanting to emulate the Hollywood glamour of their favourite actresses. A new demand for ladies handbag luxuries including cosmetics, perfumes, powder and mirror compacts ensued.

Collectors of powder compacts are more prolific in America than Britain but this is changing as more and more people become enticed into the nostalgia and romance of the compact.
