First manufactured in France in the late 1700’s skeleton clocks proved to be very popular and by the mid 18th century were widely available across London with people liking the novelty factor of being able to see the intricate mechanisms and workings of the clock under a glass dome.
The glass dome, like the glass surround in this skeleton clock, performed a very important task in that it protected the fine mechanisms from dust.
