| Emperor Penguin | Latin Name - Aptenodytes forsteri
The largest penguin, the Emperor stands about 1.3 m and weighs between 20 and 45 kg. These birds live along the coasts and neighbouring seas of Antarctica. They are well adapted to the cold climate. To further protect themselves against the cold, groups of adults and young huddle close to one another. They eat fish and squid that they catch in their sharp beaks while swimming under water.
Interesting to note that it is the male Emperor Penguin that incubates the egg, and initially looks after the chick, as in the Crown derby Penguin and Chick Paperweight.
The translation to Paperweight captures the bird's graceful and elegant movements through the water in the surface decoration on the back of this paperweight. The swirls, bubbles and patterns of light within the water are imitated using a combination of inglaze and onglaze blues with highlights of gold.
